Taxon Description 

Perennial herbs, with creeping rhizome. Stems usually erect, simple or sometimes branched dichotomously on distal part, pubescent. Leaves cauline, alternate, (sub-) sessile, simple, lanceolate-oblanceolate, base usually amplexicaul clasping stems axis, veins many strongly distinct, slightly pubescent. Inflorescences many-flowered terminal (sub-) corymb or rarely raceme, sometimes dichotomously branched; pedicillate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, campanulate, erect; bracteolate. Tepals 6, greenish white with purple spots, in two whorls, outer with pouches near base, inner flat, free, usually with recurved or reflexed apex. Stamens 6, inserted at base of tepals; filaments slightly flattened; anthers dorsifixed, extrose. Ovary 3-loculed, many ovules per locule; style columner; stigma 3-lobed, each lobe becomes bifid at apex. Fruit a linear, oblong, septicidal capsule, with 3 angles. Seeds many, small, flat.

About 18 species from the Himalayas to E Asia. One species native to Nepal (Tricyrtis maculata).
