Taxon Description

Perennial herbs, 35–90(–130) cm tall. Rhizomes thick, creeping. Stems simple or branched dichotomously on distal part, covered short and soft hairs. Leaves simple, sessile, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 6–17 × 2.5–7.5 cm, base deeply cordate, apex acuminate, margin ciliate, covered with many soft and short hairs, veins many, strong, parallel. Inflorescences terminal, 3- to many-flowered, (sub-) corymb, sometimes dichotomously branched; bracteoles small. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, campanulate, erect; pedicel 2.5–5 cm. Tepals greenish, or creamy white with purple spots, spreading horizontally, unequal, outer slightly broader than inner, outer oblong, with two lobed pouches near base, inner narrowly lanceolate, without pouches, 4–5 × 1.2–2 cm, broader at base and narrowly contracted towards apex. Filaments recurved near tips, pubescent, 1.2–1.6 cm; anthers elliptic, 1–2 mm. Ovary narrow, 2–4 cm; style 0.6–1.5 cm; stigma lobes spreading with bifid apices. Capsule triquatrous, septicidal, 4–6 × 0.7–1 cm. Seeds many, small, flattened.

Distribution: Nepal, E Himalaya, Assam–Burma, and E Asia.

Altitudinal range: 1300–2500(–3900) m.

Ecology: Mixed or broadleaved forests, forest edges, shady and moist slopes, meadows.

Flowering: July–August. Fruiting: July–September.
