Taxon Description

Plants epiphytic or terrestrial herbs. Pseudobulbs (stem) more or less fleshy, elongated, close together, joined internodes covered by leaf-sheath. Leaves appear near the apex of pseudobulbs, 1-6 leaves, linear, lanceolate, or narrowly elliptic, thin-textured or coriaceous without a distinct petiole. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, racemose, erect, more or less hairy, generally 5-20-flowered; peduncle, rachis generally pubescent, floral bract conspicuous, longer or shorter than the pedicel. Flowers in dense or lax cylindrical or globular heads, widely opening or not, color very variable, small to medium-sized. Sepals unequal, free, densely to sparsely pubescent abaxially, attached to a long column foot to form a mentum. Petals similar in size and color to dorsal sepal. lip simple to 3-lobed, with or without keels on disc, hinged at base to column foot. Column terete, clavate, short and straight, or long and little curved, continuing directly into the base of the lip, broad, often 2-winged, foot prominent, pollinia 8. Capsule elliptic-oblong, or narrowly oblanceolate, or fusiform-elliptic.
