Taxon Description

Terrestrial herbs sometimes also occurring at the base of tree trunks. Roots fibrous, stout. Rhizome creeping, distinctly elongate or indistinct. Pseudobulbs stout, conic, ovoid, subglobose, cylindric enclosed by basal sheaths of leaves. Leaves ensiform, elliptic or linear-elliptic, plicate, petiolate or sub-sessile. Inflorescence racemose, terminal, axillary or arises from base of the pseudobulbs, erect, few to many-flowered; floral bracts persistent or caducous. Flowers resupinate, opening widely or sometimes not opening widely. Sepals free, subequal. Petals often smaller than sepals. Lip free or adnate to base or sides of column wings, entire, or lobed, base spurred or spurless; disk often lamellate or ridges. Column short, winged; pollinia 8 in 2 groups; caudicle short or indistinct, stigma lateral; rostellum entire or lobed. Fruit a capsule usually ellipsoid, ovoid or oblong.

Taxon Statistics

Worldwide about 223 species distributed throughout the tropics. Eighteen species in Nepal, including one endemic species. 

Calanthe biloba Lindl. was reported in the Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal and subsequent literature but no verified specimens from Nepal have been located, so it is not included in this account.

Taxon Description

Plants 2040 cm tall. Rhizome indistinct, base with cluster of roots. Pseudobulbs ovoid-conic, covered by leaf sheaths. Leaves elliptic-ovate, 1020 × 2.57 cm, apex acute, petiole-like base and tubular sheath 28 mm. Scape arising from leaf axils, 1525 cm, overtopping the leaves, rachis 610 cm, laxly 39-flowered. Sterile bracts rarely present, lanceolate, 1015 × 45 mm, apex acute. Floral bracts lanceolate, 825 × 24 mm, apex acuminate. Flowers 1520 mm across, only half opening, yellowish green, lip with purplish red striations, pedicel and ovary 1.53 cm, sparsely hairy. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, ovate-lanceolate to subelliptic, 1520 × 56 mm, apex aristate. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal. Petals not reflexed, ovate-lanceolate, 1016 × 45 mm, apex acute. Lip adnate to base of column wings, broadly ovate-cordate, 58 × 610 mm, entire, margin fimbriate, apex emarginate; disk without callus and lamella; spur cylindric, straight, 1015 mm. Column 56 mm. Floral bracts narrowly lanceolate, 1015 × 12 mm, apex acuminate. Flowers 710 mm across, widely opening, white to yellowish green, sepals and petals with reddish brown striations, pedicel and ovary arcuate, 12 cm, densely hairy. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, narrowly lanceolate, 1015 × 23 mm, apex acuminate. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal. Petals not reflexed, linear, 1015 × 22.5 mm, apex acuminate. Lip adnate to column wings, trowel-shaped, 1015 × 46 mm, distinctly 3-lobed or only obscurely lobed; lateral lobes ovate-triangular, 56 × 46 mm, apex acute; mid-lobe elliptic-rhombic, 610 × 57 mm, margin crenate, apex aristate; disk with 35 ridges; spur cylindric, arcuate, 35 mm. Scape arising from axil of leaf, 2027 cm, overtopping the leaves, rachis 69 cm, laxly 35-flowered. Sterile bracts absent. Floral bracts lanceolate, 1015 × 12 mm, apex acuminate. Flowers ca. 15 mm across, widely opening, yellowish green, markings with reddish brown striations, pedicel and ovary 11.5 cm, glabrous. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, lanceolate, 811 × 23 mm, apex acuminate. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal, slightly oblique. Petals not reflexed, obliquely lanceolate, 810 × 12 mm, apex acuminate. Lip free from column wings, entire, more or less similar to petals, oblong-lanceolate, 911 × 23 mm, apex acuminate to aristate; disk without callus or lamella; spur absent. Column 45 mm. Capsule ellipsoid.

 Distribution: Endemic to Nepal.

 Altitudinal range: 2,200 m.

 Ecology: Forest margins in moist shady slopes.

Flowers 510 mm across, only half opening, dark brown, with golden yellow lip, pedicel and ovary 12 cm, sparsely hairy. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, oblong-lanceolate, 510 × 12 mm, apex acute. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal. Petals not reflexed, lanceolate, 67 × 23 mm, apex acute. Scape arising from leaf axil, 1540 cm, overtopping the leaves, rachis 621 cm, laxly 430-flowered. Sterile bracts lanceolate, 610 × 23 mm, apex acute. Floral bracts lanceolate, 412 × 11.5 mm, apex acute. Flowers 2040 mm across, widely opening, pinkish, pedicel and ovary 1.53 cm, glabrous. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, ovate-lanceolate, 1020 × 56 mm, apex acute. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal. Petals not reflexed, lanceolate, 1015 × 35 mm, apex acute. Lip adnate to the column wings, oblong, 1015 × 1012 mm, 3-lobed; lateral lobes subquardate, 57 mm, apex obtuse; mid-lobe suboblong, 5 × 7 mm, margin entire, apex emarginate; disk with 3 ridges; spur cylindric, arcuate, 1025 mm.
