Taxon Description
Terrestrial herbs sometimes also occurring at the base of tree trunks. Roots fibrous, stout. Rhizome creeping, distinctly elongate or indistinct. Pseudobulbs stout, conic, ovoid, subglobose, cylindric enclosed by basal sheaths of leaves. Leaves ensiform, elliptic or linear-elliptic, plicate, petiolate or sub-sessile. Inflorescence racemose, terminal, axillary or arises from base of the pseudobulbs, erect, few to many-flowered; floral bracts persistent or caducous. Flowers resupinate, opening widely or sometimes not opening widely. Sepals free, subequal. Petals often smaller than sepals. Lip free or adnate to base or sides of column wings, entire, or lobed, base spurred or spurless; disk often lamellate or ridges. Column short, winged; pollinia 8 in 2 groups; caudicle short or indistinct, stigma lateral; rostellum entire or lobed. Fruit a capsule usually ellipsoid, ovoid or oblong.
Taxon Statistics
Worldwide about 223 species distributed throughout the tropics. Eighteen species in Nepal, including one endemic species.
Calanthe biloba Lindl. was reported in the Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal and subsequent literature but no verified specimens from Nepal have been located, so it is not included in this account.

Taxon Description
Plants 20–40 cm tall. Rhizome indistinct, base with cluster of roots. Pseudobulbs ovoid-conic, covered by leaf sheaths. Leaves elliptic-ovate, 10–20 × 2.5–7 cm, apex acute, petiole-like base and tubular sheath 2–8 mm. Scape arising from leaf axils, 15–25 cm, overtopping the leaves, rachis 6–10 cm, laxly 3–9-flowered. Sterile bracts rarely present, lanceolate, 10–15 × 4–5 mm, apex acute. Floral bracts lanceolate, 8–25 × 2–4 mm, apex acuminate. Flowers 15–20 mm across, only half opening, yellowish green, lip with purplish red striations, pedicel and ovary 1.5–3 cm, sparsely hairy. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, ovate-lanceolate to subelliptic, 15–20 × 5–6 mm, apex aristate. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal. Petals not reflexed, ovate-lanceolate, 10–16 × 4–5 mm, apex acute. Lip adnate to base of column wings, broadly ovate-cordate, 5–8 × 6–10 mm, entire, margin fimbriate, apex emarginate; disk without callus and lamella; spur cylindric, straight, 10–15 mm. Dorsal sepal not reflexed, narrowly lanceolate, 10–15 × 2–3 mm, apex acuminate. Lateral sepals similar to dorsal sepal. Petals not reflexed, linear, 10–15 × 2–2.5 mm, apex acuminate. Lip adnate to column wings, trowel-shaped, 10–15 × 4–6 mm, distinctly 3-lobed or only obscurely lobed; lateral lobes ovate-triangular, 5–6 × 4–6 mm, apex acute; mid-lobe elliptic-rhombic, 6–10 × 5–7 mm, margin crenate, apex aristate; disk with 3–5 ridges; spur cylindric, arcuate, 3–5 mm. Column 4–5 mm. Capsule fusiform.
Distribution: Nepal, Tibetan Plateau, SE Asia and C Asia.
Altitudinal range: 2,000–2,100 m.

Column 4–5 mm. Capsule clavate.
