Taxon Description
Epiphytic or epilithic herbs. Rhizome creeping or aerial, producing roots and pseudobulbs. Pseudobulbs nodeless, smooth or furrowed, either contiguous or spaced on rhizome. Leaves often 1 or occasionally 2, arising from apex of pseudobulbs, lamina often leathery. Inflorescence arising laterally from base of pseudobulb or from a node of rhizome, solitary, racemose, subumbellate or umbellate, 1- to many-flowered; peduncle bracts distant or overlapped, often tubular. Floral bracts often not exceeding the pedicel and ovary. Flowers fully or only half opened. Dorsal sepal free, lateral sepals free or connate on lower or upper edges, longer than dorsal sepal, base adnate to column foot forming a short mentum. Petals free, usually shorter than sepals. Lip often adnate to end of column foot, mobile or immobile, often unlobed or sometimes 3-lobed, fleshy and deflexed, grooved at base or smooth. Column short, winged, base with a foot; apex often extending to form stelidia; anther 1 or 2-locular; pollinia 4, in 2 pairs, waxy, lacking appendages. Fruit a capsule.
